Rounding Rules

FLSA Rounding Rule

The FLSA rounding rule is a U.S. Department of Labor provision permitting employers to round employee time to the nearest 5 minutes, one-tenth of an hour, or quarter-hour, provided the rounding policy does not systematically undercount employee hours over time.

Quarter-Hour Rounding

Quarter-hour rounding is a payroll timekeeping practice in which clock times are rounded to the nearest 15-minute increment (0.25 decimal hours), so punches between :08 and :22 round to :15 and punches between :23 and :37 round to :30.

Tenth-of-an-Hour Rounding

Tenth-of-an-hour rounding is a payroll timekeeping practice in which clock times are rounded to the nearest 6-minute increment (0.10 decimal hours), producing time values ending in .0, .1, .2, .3, .4, .5, .6, .7, .8 or .9.

6-minute bands: 0-3 min rounds down; 4-9 min rounds up to next tenth; e.g., 7:34 rounds to 7.6 hrs.

Rounding Band

A rounding band is the defined minute range within which all clock punches are rounded to the same decimal-hour value. In quarter-hour rounding, the band from :08 to :22 rounds to the 0.25 increment.
