Absence and Tardiness Types

Classifies the specific event types a policy must name and treat differently. This is the vocabulary of what actually happens when employees miss time.

Unexcused Absence

An unexcused absence is a full-day or partial-day absence that does not meet the policy's criteria for an approved excuse, such as advance notice, qualifying documentation or protected-leave status, and therefore counts as an occurrence against the employee's attendance record.

Policies must explicitly list what qualifies as excused (FMLA, bereavement, jury duty) to make the unexcused category legally defensible.

Excused Absence

No-Call No-Show

Many policies assign a no-call no-show double the point value of a standard unexcused absence; three consecutive no-call no-shows are commonly treated as voluntary resignation.

Tardiness
